Arenado's 4 RBIs drive Rockies past Diamondbacks

PHOENIX -- In a game with a postseason feel between two playoff contenders, Nolan Arenado let his bat do most of the talking.
Arenado's tie-breaking three-run home run in the eighth inning powered the Colorado Rockies to a 5-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.
Arenado circled the bases, celebrated with teammates and exchanged some words with a heckling fan near the visiting dugout.
"There was a guy, he didn't stop talking the whole game. That was a pretty long game," Arenado said. "It is what it is. It was cool, man. It was fine, and he got me fired up, and lucky I was able to tell him to be quiet there for a second."
The Rockies took the first game of a key four-game series between the National League wild-card leader, Arizona, and second-place Colorado. The Rockies moved four games behind the Diamondbacks and 3 1/2 ahead of St. Louis for the second wild card slot.
Arenado drove in four runs with a double and his 33rd home run of the season, and the Rockies won their seventh straight road game and fifth overall.
Left-hander Tyler Anderson, activated from the 60-day disabled list on Sunday, pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the victory. Anderson (4-5) allowed a hit with four strikeouts.
"I thought as he (Anderson) moved into the game, his stuff was better. He started making pitches," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "You could say he was the key to the game."
The Rockies' winning rally started with two outs in the eighth. D.J. LeMahieu tripled over the top of an extreme defensive shift toward right field and Carlos Gonzalez walked against Diamondbacks reliever Jake Barrett (1-1).
Arenado's home run followed, giving him a major-league leading 123 runs batted in on the season. It was his seventh home run to give the Rockies the lead in the eighth inning or later in his career and the third of 2017.
"It was a bad slider. I didn't get exactly on top of the ball," Barrett said.
The Diamondbacks came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth off Rockies relievers Jake McGee and Pat Neshek. Paul Goldschmidt's ground out drove in Chris Iannetta, and hot-hitting J.D. Martinez singled in A.J. Pollock to cut Colorado's lead to 5-4.
"We pressed them, they pressed us. We came out on top," Black said.
Martinez, on the same day he was named NL Player of the Week for last week when he batted .429 with seven home runs, went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Mike Dunn got pinch hitter Daniel Descalso to fly out to deep center to end the eighth, and Greg Holland pitched a scoreless ninth for his NL-leading 40th save.
Holland stranded runners at second and third, inducing a Pollock ground out to end the game.
"We couldn't get that big hit or that big moment to push across for us," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "We had some opportunities. We just didn't do it."
Diamondbacks starter Zack Greinke allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts over seven innings.
Greinke, with his fifth-inning strikeout of Anderson, reached 200 strikeouts on the season for the sixth time in his career, all six times since 2009.
NO-HIT ZONE
Arenado, known for outstanding defense, made the play of the night when he dived to his right to snag a one-hopper headed down the left-field line off the bat of Pollock in the sixth. Arenado sprang to his feet and threw a one-bouncer to first base just in time for the out.
"I was just happy to stop it," Arenado said.
COOPERSTOWN BOUND
The bat that Martinez used to hit four home runs at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 4 was packed up at Chase Field and sent to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in New York on Monday.
EXTRA-BASE BLACKMON
The Rockies' Charlie Blackmon, with his first-inning double, became the sixth leadoff hitter since 1914 to collect 80 or more extra base hits in a season.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Rockies: Starting pitcher Kyle Freeland was struck in shoulder by a line drive off the bat of Martinez in the top of the fourth, and left the game after being checked by a trainer. The Rockies announced later that Freeland had a left shoulder contusion, and Freeland said he also felt the impact on his jaw.
Freeland said he was OK after the game, though he expected soreness.
"Don't throw fastballs down the middle," he said.
UP NEXT
Rockies: RHP Jon Gray (7-4) has a 2.55 earned run average over his last seven starts, but he's 1-2 with 5.40 career ERA against Tuesday's foe, Arizona.
Diamondbacks: RHP Taijuan Walker (9-7) faces Colorado with the Diamondbacks having won in each of his past four starts.

Yanks top Rays 5-1 as Frazier homers in series moved to Mets

NEW YORK -- In the start of a series moved from Florida to Citi Field because of Hurricane Irma, Todd Frazier capitalized on Trevor Plouffe's two-out error with a three-run homer in a five-run fourth inning that led the New York Yankees over the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 on Monday night.
Jacoby Ellsbury broke Pete Rose's major league record by reaching base on catcher's interference for the 30th time, and David Robertson (8-2) pitched a career-high 2 2/3 innings in relief of CC Sabathia, removed with two on and one out in the fifth.
Opening a stretch that has 17 of their final 20 games in New York, the Yankees closed within three games of Boston in the AL East and opened a four-game lead over Minnesota for the top AL wild card. The Rays dropped four games behind the Twins with 17 remaining and have five other teams to overcome.
Major League Baseball moved the series to Queens because of the availability of hotel rooms in New York. The Rays wore home white uniforms, hit last, used the Mets clubhouse and were introduced to their regular walkup music. They hope to return to Tropicana Field for a three-game series against Boston starting Friday.
Only the lower deck was open, ticket prices were capped at $25 and a pro-Yankees crowd of 15,327 booed the Rays when they ran onto the field for the first pitch.
This was just the fifth big league series moved to a neutral site because of weather and the second in less than a month after Houston played Texas at Tampa Bay because of Hurricane Harvey. The Chicago White Sox hosted Montreal and Florida in 2004 because of Hurricane Ivan, the Los Angeles Angels played Cleveland in Milwaukee in 2007 because of snow and the Chicago Cubs met Houston at Milwaukee in 2008 due to Hurricane Ike.
In April 1998, the Yankees beat the Anaheim Angels 6-3 at Shea Stadium in a game moved after the crash of a 71-year-old steel-and-concrete joint at old Yankee Stadium. While the Mets' Home Run Apple started to rise when Darryl Strawberry went deep then, there was no such mishap this time.
Ellsbury set an obscure major league record on his 34th birthday, nicking Wilson Ramos' mitt on a slow curveball from Jake Odorizzi (8-8). Ellsbury set the season mark with 12 last year and has four this season. He reached the record in 5,308 plate appearance, about one-third of Rose's 15,890.
After starting with 6 1/3 hitless innings against Minnesota last week, Odorizzi did not allow a hit until the fourth, when he threw just 15 of 51 pitches for strikes and was chased with two outs. Just one of the five runs off Odorizzi was earned, and he allowed three hits and three walks while throwing 94 pitches over 3 2/3 innings. Just before Odorizzi left the game, Plouffe walked to the mound and said "my bad."
Sabathia was helped in the third when Tampa Bay had two on and tried for a double steal, only for Kevin Kiermaier to get tagged out oversliding second. Sabathia allowed six hits.
Ahead 1-0, Odorizzi walked Aaron Judge on four pitches leading off the fourth. Judge took third when Gary Sanchez singled on a full-count offering, and Didi Gregorius hit a sacrifice fly. After Starling Castro struck out, Matt Holliday hit a grounder to third, and Plouffe tried for a backhand grab but let the ball bounce under his glove and into the left-field corner. The slow-footed Sanchez scored from first with the go-ahead run.
Ellsbury reached on the catcher's interference, and Frazier lined a full-count slider off the front of the second deck in left for a 5-1 lead.
Adeiny Hechavarria, in a 2-for-18 slide, put the Rays ahead with an RBI triple in the second. He also singled and doubled, then flied out to the right-field warning track with two on in the eighth.
WHOOPS
Sanchez allowed his 15th passed ball, tying the Los Angeles Dodgers' Yasmani Grandal for the major league lead.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
When the Yankees traveled home from Texas, they had pillows and blankets with the face of Frazier. Sabathia arranged to purchase the apparel.
DUGOUT BUDDY
A praying mantis perched on a cup atop a railing in the Yankees dugout during the middle innings.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Yankees: 1B Greg Bird was scratched because of lower back tightness and replaced by Tyler Austin. ... OF Clint Frazier, sidelined since Aug. 9 by a left oblique strain, was activated from the DL. Girardi said Frazier will start Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.
Rays: RHP Nathan Eovaldi, coming back from Tommy John surgery in August 2016, struck out two in a hitless inning for Double-A Montgomery on Saturday in the Southern League playoffs. LHP Xavier Cedeno, returning from a forearm injury, followed with a one-hit second. Rays manager Kevin Cash said Eovaldi will next pitch for Triple-A Durham in the playoffs or the instructional league. "He's a huge part of our season next year," Cash said.
UP NEXT
RHP Sonny Gray (9-9) starts for the Yankees on Tuesday and LHP Blake Snell (3-6) for the Rays.
