CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Cole Hamels kept working on his fastball, even though balls kept flying out of the park.Chris Davis hit a three-run homer off Hamels in the first inning, one of five home runs Monday for the Baltimore Orioles in a 16-4 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies."It wasn't pretty," said Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg, whose team didn't get a hit until the fourth inning.Hamels was focusing on fastball command and largely unconcerned with his ugly pitching line, which including allowing a walk or hit to eight of 14 batters."In order to be successful in the big leagues, you have to be able to throw the fastball for strikes," he said. "I didn't do it last game. It's something I worked on during the bullpen and something I was working on today and I know I'm going to have to keep working on it. ... It's just getting the muscle memory to do so and it's just not quite there yet for me."Davis was 3 for 4 with his second homer of spring training, a double, four RBIs. He led major leagues with 53 home runs in 2013, then hit .196 with 26 homers last season, when he battled an oblique injury and served most of a 25-game suspension for a positive test for a banned amphetamine. He must sit out opening day to complete the discipline.Nolan Reimold, Jimmy Paredes, Steve Pearce and Dariel Alvarez also homered for the Orioles. Paredes had five RBIs. Pearce hit his third homer.Baltimore had 21 hits after scoring 11 runs in its previous five games."You like to see them have one of those days," manager Buck Showalter said. "They've been working hard for it."STARTING TIMEPhillies: Hamels allowed five runs, six hits and two walks in two innings, leaving him with a 9.00 ERA. He walked Everth Cabrera leading off, then gave up four extra-base hits. He's in line to start the opener against Boston on April 6.Orioles: RHP Miguel Gonzalez felt better about his mechanics after limiting the Phillies to two runs in four innings. Gonzalez, who struck out four and didn't walk a batter, said he was more comfortable on the mound following his third start of the spring. "I was staying tall over the rubber, really worked on it in my side last time," Gonzalez said. "It paid off. It felt real good."TRAINER'S ROOMPhillies: LHP Cliff Lee was placed on the 60-day DL with a left forearm strain. The 36-year-old was limited to 13 start last year with the same problem, but has elected to go against the recommendation of doctors to have surgery. ... RHP Aaron Harang threw a bullpen session, two days after missing a start due to back spasms. Harang, who has had two starts scratched, is to start on Thursday against the New York Yankees. He is confident he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. ... Domonic Brown was scratched from the lineup before first pitch due to dehydration.Orioles: C Matt Wieters is scheduled to make his 2015 catching debut on Tuesday against Minnesota. It's exactly nine months since Wieters had Tommy John surgery. RHP Ryan Webb (left knee) is making progress and could pitch this week.
