Zack Greinke was outstanding against the San Diego Padres.
This time -- thanks to one big swing by Chris Owings -- he even got the win.
Greinke struck out 11 in six innings, Owings hit his first career grand slam and the Diamondbacks held on for a 7-6 victory Monday night.
Greinke (2-2) gave up a run on six hits, including three singles by Yangervis Solarte, with no walks and left with a 6-1 lead.
Five days earlier, Greinke pitched a complete game in San Diego but lost 1-0.
"The slider was really sharp today," Greinke said. "Two games in a row now, so that was nice. ... It makes the fastball better when you have a good slider."
Some of his strikeouts came on that slider.
"I got a couple of well-located fastballs for strikeouts, too," Greinke said. "I usually get them on my slider, but locating fastballs, it was nice to do that today."
David Peralta homered and singled twice for the Diamondbacks, whose 9-2 start at home ties the best in club history.
Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save in six tries.
Jhoulys Chacin (1-0), the winner in that 1-0 Padres victory, gave up seven runs and eight hits over six innings.
Wil Myers and Austin Hedges homered for San Diego to make it a one-run game.
Myers hit a three-run homer in San Diego's four-run seventh against Silvino Bracho, who was just called up from Triple-A Reno, to cut the Arizona lead to 7-5.
Hedges' sixth home run in his last eight games, against Jorge De La Rosa leading off the eighth, made it 7-6.
Owings batted third with Paul Goldschmidt getting the night off.
"I thought it would be a nice shot in the arm for him to say, `I'm hitting third on a ballclub when Goldy's down," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said.
Not exactly a power hitter, normally, Owings looked a lot like Goldschmidt with one swing in the fifth.
"It (batting third) probably won't happen too many more times," Owings said, "so just enjoy it while you can."
Chacin retired the first two batters before Greinke singled. A.J. Pollock walked and Peralta singled to load the bases. Owings sent the first pitch onto the overhang above the 413-foot sign in left-center to make it 6-0.
Greinke pitched five scoreless innings before giving one up in the sixth, when Solarte came home on Hedges' sacrifice fly. Among his strikeouts were two by Myers.
"He is Zack Grienke. He is good," Myers said.
Bracho retired only one batter before Myers lined one well over the bullpen down the left field line. Myers' fifth home run of the season cut Arizona's lead to 7-5.
"The team doesn't quit," Padres manager Andy Green said. "They fought all the way back and gave us an opportunity to win the baseball game. We got the tying run on second base in the eighth inning."
Attendance was announced at 14,758. The smallest home crowd in franchise history was 14,110.
PERALTA'S RUN
Peralta is on a roll. In his last eight games, he's batting .548 (17 for 31) with four doubles, a triple, a home run, three RBI and seven runs.
He has raised his average to .329.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Padres: San Diego placed OF Travis Jankowski on the 10-day DL with a bruised bone in his right foot. Jankowski was hurt when he fouled a ball off the foot in Atlanta on April 14 and his attempt to play through the injury was unsuccessful. Green said Jankowski would be in a walking boot for a few days and there was no timetable for his return. OF Jabari Blash was recalled from Triple-A El Paso and was in the lineup Monday night.
Diamondbacks: RHP Shelby Miller, placed on the 10-day DL with right elbow inflammation, will go to Los Angeles for a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, team physician for the Dodgers and Rams. Lovullo said he'd talk more about the specifics of the injury after the second exam. No decision has been made on who will replace Miller in the rotation.
UP NEXT
Lefties Clayton Richard (2-2, 3.04 ERA) of the Padres and Patrick Corbin (1-3, 3.27) of the Diamondbacks meet in a rematch of a game in San Diego last Friday. Richard scattered nine hits over 6 2/3 innings in the Padres' 4-1 win.
