Votto collects 4 hits as Reds beat White Sox 6-3

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Joey Votto had four hits, Brandon Phillips homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 at spring training on Wednesday.
Votto scored twice and drove in two runs. The slugger has hit safely in 13 of his 19 appearances and reached safely in 17 games.
Votto was aboard for Phillips' second spring homer in the third against Jose Quintana. Phillips also doubled in the first and singled in the sixth.
"Some really nice offensive days from those guys in the middle of the order," Reds manager Bryan Price said.
Quintana was charged with four runs and nine hits in three-plus innings. He struck out three and walked three.
"Today, I missed a lot in the zone. I threw too many pitches. My cutter was bad. It was a tough day," Quintana said. "It was just one bad day."
Reds minor leaguer Josh Smith pitched five innings of one-run ball in his first Cactus League start. The right-hander struck out six and walked one.
Smith retired his first 10 batters before Tyler Saladino hit his fifth home run.
Saladino had two of Chicago's four hits.
AMAZING RACE
On Phillips' homer, Votto waited for the fly ball to clear the fence. Phillips chased Votto around the bases about a step behind. Both smiled as Votto maintained his slight lead.
STARTING TIME
White Sox: Quintana pitched six innings in his previous start against Seattle.
"My arm feels good. That's all for spring training," Quintana said. "I'm ready to focus on the season. A bad outing is part of the game."
Reds: Smith made his major league debut with Cincinnati last season and went 0-4 with a 6.89 ERA in nine games, seven starts.
"It was everything we hoped that he would do after last year's experience," Price said. "He was challenging hitters and was way more aggressive in the strike zone. They had some pretty good hitters. It was nice to see him attack that lineup."
ROSTER MOVES
The White Sox purchased the contract of veteran infielder Jimmy Rollins from Triple-A Charlotte. Right-hander Scott Carroll was optioned to Charlotte, and right-hander Jacob Turner was outrighted to Chicago's top farm club.
The Reds optioned outfielder Tyler Holt to Triple-A Louisville. They also re-assigned right-handers Drew Hayes, Pedro Villarreal, Ryan Mattheus and J.C. Ramirez to minor league camp. Rule 5 selection LHP Chris O'Grady cleared waivers and was offered back to the Los Angeles Angels, who have three days to decide if they want to take him back for $25,000.
UP NEXT
White Sox: The White Sox travel to San Diego, with RHP Mat Latos facing the Padres on Friday night.
Reds: LHP Cody Reed is scheduled to pitch against Indians RHP Carlos Carrasco on Thursday.

Gosselin drives in 5 in Diamondbacks' 12-9 win over A's

MESA, Ariz. -- Phil Gosselin had three hits including a triple and 5 RBI, Wellington Castillo homered and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Oakland Athletics 12-9 on Wednesday.
Shelby Miller pitched four innings in his final spring appearance, giving up seven runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out four. Tuffy Gosewisch and Yasmani Tomas also drove in runs for Arizona.
A's starter Rich Hill had his best outing of the spring, allowing a pair of runs on two hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two.
Every A's position players had one at-bat and left the game for an early flight to Oakland.
Top prospects Matt Chapman and Chad Pinder each hit a home run for the A's. Chris Coghlan drove in a pair of runs and Yonder Alfonso drove in one.
Arizona's Jean Segura singled, his 30th hit of the spring, to improve to .517. Castillo has 12 RBI in his last seven games.
STARTING TIME
Diamondbacks: Miller allowed as many runs (7) as he did in his first four outings, but no one was making a big issue of it.
"The biggest thing is to get out healthy and keep your pitch count up," Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler said after pitching a scoreless inning. "You can see the talent and you know he'll be ready April 4."
Ziegler said the revamped starting rotation will help ease the burden on the bullpen and give Arizona a chance every time out.
"We have an offense that's great at creating runs," he said. "The bottom line is we still have to go out and execute and once we get the lead, it will be up to us to put up zeroes."
Athletics: Hill got a big boost from a solid outing, his last before starting April 5 in Oakland against the Chicago White Sox.
"It was just being ultra-aggressive," Hill said. "That was the biggest thing. I got on a roll to start and as the game went on, we were picking up the pace."
Hill gave up 13 runs in three previous starts before making two starts in minor league camp.
"It was like night and day," he said of control issues. "I got into an attack mode in the bullpen and carried that into the game. Everything came out crisp and clean."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Diamondbacks: OF A.J. Pollock (right elbow soreness) went 3-for-4 in an intrasquad game Tuesday as he attempts to get ready for opening day.
Athletics: OF Coco Crisp (hamstring) took some swings but is unlikely to play until the A's return to the Bay Area. ... RHP R.J. Alvarez underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. ... RHP Henderson Alvarez will have a light throwing day on Saturday and throw to hitters next Wednesday.
UP NEXT
Diamondbacks: RHP Braden Shipley starts for Arizona against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday in Scottsdale.
Athletics: RHP Chris Bassitt will start Thursday night's game in San Francisco against the Giants and RHP Jeff Samardzija.

Rays' Smyly sharp in final tuneup for regular season

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Drew Smyly pitched four hitless innings and struck out seven in his final spring training outing to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-3 victory over a Boston Red Sox split squad Wednesday.
Mike Mahtook and Brad Miller homered off right-hander William Cuevas, who allowed four runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings for the Red Sox. Miller also had a RBI double off the Red Sox starter.
Smyly retired nine in a row before walking Brock Holt leading off the fourth. He struck out Dustin Pedroia, Xander Bogaerts and David Ortiz to finish his 61-pitch outing.
The 26-year-old left-hander will begin the regular season as the No. 2 starter in a four-man rotation led by Chris Archer. He was 5-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 starts in 2015, when he spent a total of 105 games on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.
"I think everyone's getting antsy for the season. They wanted it to start. It's a good way to end (spring training)," said Smyly, who's scheduled to make his season debut next Monday against Toronto.
"I put the most emphasis on my curveball today. To be really aggressive with it. Throw it full speed, try to get some swing and misses," Smyly added. "I got some good results."
Boston's Hanley Ramirez had two hits, including a RBI double, to raise his spring batting average to .320. Travis Shaw singled to drive in the second of three runs the Red Sox scored off reliever Enny Romero in the seventh.
Boston bench coach Torey Lovullo said Ramirez, who's making the transition to everyday first baseman after playing left field last season, has had a good spring.
"He's very engaged on both sides of the ball," said Lovullo, standing in for manager John Farrell, who accompanied another Red Sox split squad on its trip to Bradenton.
"I know he's been working very hard behind the scenes," the bench coach added. "He comes to the ball park early to work on things on the back fields ... and it's playing out for us. He's having a good time. He's making some really nice plays. ... He's very engaged and excited defensively, and offensively it's the same guy that we've been seeing all spring training."
STARTING TIME
Red Sox: Cuevas, who was reassigned to minor league camp on March 13, made his first appearance for the major league team since working one inning against the Miami Marlins on March 12. Wednesday was his longest outing this spring. Roman Mendez finished the sixth, and Noe Ramirez and Robbie Ross Jr. each pitched one scoreless inning.
Rays: Archer and Smyly are joined in Tampa Bay's rotation by right-hander Jake Odorizzi and lefty Matt Moore. Manager Kevin Cash doesn't anticipate needing a fifth starter until mid-May, so right-hander Erasmo Ramirez will begin the season in the bullpen after making 27 starts and winning 11 games in 2015.
ROSTER MOVES
Red Sox: Boston optioned left-handed pitcher Roenis Elias to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Rays: Tampa told 1B James Loney, who fell out of its plans following the offseason acquisition of Logan Morrison and Steve Pearce, that he will not make the team. So far, the veteran of nine big league seasons has not been released or traded.
Relief pitcher David Carpenter and catcher Rene Rivera were released. Right-hander Matt Andriese and infielder Richie Shaffer were optioned to Triple-A Durham.
Parting ways with Rivera, who hit .178 with five homers and 26 RBI in 110 games last season, leaves Curt Casali and Hank Conger to share the catching duties.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: They host Minnesota, with right-hander Clay Buchholz starting for Boston and the Twins sending right-hander Kyle Gibson to the mound.
Ray: They host the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Odorizzi making his final spring start.
