Welington Castillo homered and drove in five runs, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Seattle Mariners 10-8 Monday.
Castillo did all his damage in the game's first four innings, getting three hits. He's coming off a successful 2015 season that saw him find a home behind the plate as the Diamondbacks' No. 1 catcher over the second half. He had 17 home runs and 50 RBI in 80 games after the Mariners traded him to Arizona in early June.
"Just trying to go out there and enjoy what I do. I don't worry about my hitting at all," Castillo said. "There's a lot of guys that want my job and anybody's job. I just don't put my head down, that's not the kind of guy that I am. I like to go out and compete. Hungry, hungry to play every day no matter what happens."
For the Mariners, Kyle Seager homered and slugging first baseman Dae-Ho Lee, who starred in Korea and Japan before signing with Seattle this offseason, hit his first home run of the spring and started a double play on defense.
"The fastball I hit, it wasn't that fast," Lee said via a translator. "I was thinking a changeup."
Phil Gosselin, who played second base as the Diamondbacks tinker with their middle infield combinations early in spring, had three hits and scored twice. Shortstop Nick Ahmed had two hits and drove in three runs.
David Peralta beat the defensive shift twice with singles through the hole at third base and scored twice.
"I was just trying to let the ball get deep and hit it the other way," Peralta said with a slight laugh. "I wasn't thinking to hit the ball to third base. If I get jammed, that was what was going to happen, a groundball to third base."
Neither team's starting pitchers were effective. Seattle's James Paxton gave up four runs on seven hits in three innings. Arizona's Rubby De La Rosa was chased after facing one batter in the bottom of the third after allowing three runs on four hits and two walks.
"The results obviously are not what I'm looking for," said Paxton, who is trying to secure a starting rotation spot. "But I felt like I threw the ball really well. Early on, I wasn't getting ahead of guys as much as I would like but I did a better job with that the second and third inning. The homer (by Castillo) was probably not ... a homer in a lot of places."
ROSTER MOVES
The Diamondbacks made several roster moves before Monday's game, optioning RHP Dominic Leone to Triple-A Reno and C Oscar Hernandez to Single-A Visalia. RHPs Matt Buschmann, Jose Cisnero, Miller Diaz, Adam Miller and Matt Stites, LHP Will Locante and C Ronnie Freeman were re-assigned to minor league camp. "With 39 pitchers especially, you have to start to thin it out. There's just no innings for guys," Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. For the 22-year-old Hernandez, who appeared in 18 major league games as a Rule 5 player last year, the plan is to get him plenty of at-bats in the minors.
STARTING TIME
Diamondbacks: De La Rosa has already been announced as the fourth man in the Diamondbacks' opening day rotation. "Last year was just a matter of him getting starts and pitching all year and being healthy enough to do it," Hale said.
Mariners: The second spring training start for lefty Paxton didn't go as well as the first. After getting the first two outs of the first inning, Paxton gave up four straght hits and two runs. Paxton pitched two scoreless innings on March 2. "His fastball can be dominant at times. The cutter and the curve ball weren't there today," manager Scott Servais said. "There were some decent changeups."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Diamondbacks: OF Yasmany Tomas is dealing with a sore left knee and was scratched from Monday's lineup. Tomas also will not appear in either of the team's split-squad games on Tuesday. "He got a lot of at-bats (Sunday), Hale said. "Doesn't seem to be anything too serious, just some soreness. Just trying to be as cautious as we can early in camp."
Mariners: Relievers Evan Scribner and Ryan Cook are dealing with sore backs. Scribner has yet to pitch in a game. Reliever Charlie Furbush threw live batting practice Monday as he returns from shoulder and arm injuries that ended his season in July last year.
UP NEXT
Diamondbacks: LHP Robbie Ray is set for his second spring training start Tuesday when Arizona hosts the Los Angeles Angels in a split-squad game. In Peoria, Zack Godley, competing with Ray for the final starting rotation spot, starts against San Diego earlier in the day.
Mariners: RHP Nathan Karns will look to build off his first spring training start, in which he allowed a hit in two scoreless innings, against Cleveland on Tuesday.
