Story, Freeland help Rockies beat D-backs to move into 1st

PHOENIX -- Kyle Freeland gave Colorado precisely what it needed after a tough few days for its pitching staff.
The 23-year-old right-hander held the high-scoring Arizona Diamondbacks to a run over six effective innings and Trevor Story homered to help the Rockies win 3-1 Friday night.
Colorado moved into first place in the NL West, a half-game ahead of the Diamondbacks, in the opener of the three-game series.
The Rockies had just lost three straight at Coors Field to the Washington Nationals, allowing 42 runs over that span.
Freeland (3-1) gave up a run and six hits with two walks. He struck out two and lowered his ERA to 2.93. Chris Rusin, Adam Ottavino and Greg Holland combined for three scoreless innings, with Holland earning his 10th save.
"I was impressed by how he hung in there," Rockies manager Bud Black said of Freeland.
Arizona left-hander Robbie Ray (2-1) struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings but allowed three runs and five hits with three walks.
Nolan Arenado hit a ground-rule double to left field with two outs in the first inning and scored on Carlos Gonzalez's single. Story, who hit six of his 27 homers last season against Arizona, made it 2-0 in the second with his fifth of the season.
The Diamondbacks answered with a run in the third. Freeland got two outs before A.J. Pollock singled, Chris Owings walked and Paul Goldschmidt lined a 3-2 pitch to center field to drive in Pollock.
The Diamondbacks had runners on second and third with one out for Goldschmidt in the fifth, even after Story dived behind second base to rob Pollock of a hit and force a fielder's choice. But Freeland worked out of the jam, as Goldschmidt was retired on a broken bat popup and Yasmany Tomas bounced out.
"Good pitch, good result," Black said. "Hitters three and four in a one-run game, good stuff."
Charlie Blackmon's two-out single in the seventh drove in Pat Valaika and chased Ray. Blackmon extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Arizona had five straight wins over the Rockies going back to last season and entered the game second in the majors in total runs with 132.
"Kind of an unfortunate night for us. I thought Robbie did an incredible job, keeping a very offensive team down and kept us in striking distance all game long," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "Offensively we couldn't piece things together. We couldn't string a bunch of hits together, which we typically have done."
GOOD GRABS
Both teams had outfielders turn in big defensive plays. Tomas, not typically known for his glove work, ran down Dustin Garneau's fly for a backhanded catch in the second inning before hitting the left field wall. Blackmon took a hit away from Arizona's David Peralta when the Rockies center fielder slid to catch a sinking fly ball.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Rockies: RHP Chad Bettis, on the 60-day disabled list as he battles testicular cancer, is with the team this weekend and played catch in the outfield before Friday's game. "This is what I needed," Bettis said. "It's been great to walk through those doors." Bettis has seven days of treatments remaining over three weeks. ... INF Ian Desmond played an extended spring training game on Friday as he works his way back from a broken left hand. Desmond could return to the Rockies in the next few days. ... OF David Dahl (rib) is also at extended spring training doing rehab work.
Diamondbacks: 2B Brandon Drury returned to the lineup after missing Thursday to rest a jammed right knee.
UP NEXT
Rockies: LHP Tyler Anderson (1-3) brings a 7.11 ERA into his scheduled start against Arizona. It will be his fourth road start in six this season.
Diamondbacks: RHP Zack Greinke (2-2) faces the Rockies. He is 7-4 with a 4.09 ERA in 19 career starts against Colorado.

Pujols' tiebreaking 3-run HR gives Angels 6-3 win at Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mike Trout wasn't getting a chance to hit another go-ahead homer for the Los Angeles Angels.
Instead, Albert Pujols did -- and made the Texas Rangers pay.
On the fifth-year anniversary of his last call-up from the minor leagues, two-time AL MVP Trout -- who had already homered earlier -- was walked in the eighth inning of a tie game. Pujols then hit the next pitch for a three-run homer that pushed the Angels to a 6-3 victory Friday night.
"We weren't giving into Trout at all," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "Look, there was a situation there, he had hit the ball hard a couple of times, and we were not going to give in there. Move on to Pujols."
Pujols' third homer of the season came off Jeremy Jeffress (0-2), who had already allowed a single to Kole Calhoun before pitching around Trout.
"Albert is going to be Albert. Big situations, he comes up clutch, and his first few at-bats, missing a few pitches he usually hits," Trout said. "But he was aggressive on that at-bat and got a pitch to hit."
Trout went 3 for 4, made an acrobatic catch in the bottom of the seventh, an inning after his two-run homer for a 3-1 lead. The 25-year-old Trout is hitting .355 with seven homers and 17 RBI.
"He's been spectacular, but the beauty of Mike is that he's not chasing numbers. He's not doing anything but playing baseball," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's not doing anything but thinking about helping us win."
Los Angeles quickly led 1-0 after Yunel Escobar went deep on the first pitch of the game.
Deolis Guerra (1-1) picked up the win after a striking out two in a scoreless seventh inning.
Jose Alvarez worked a perfect ninth, getting his first save in his 157th career game. The right-hander made his MLB debut for Detroit in 2013, and has been with the Angels since.
Angels starter Tyler Skaggs limited Texas to one run and four hits in five innings. He struck out six and left the game after throwing just 76 pitches due to right-side tightness. He felt a pinch between his rib and hip on a curveball that struck out Joey Gallo.
"Everything felt fine but I knew if I pitched through it would get worse," said Skaggs, who threw to only one batter after that.
Nick Martinez allowed five hits and three runs in six innings in his second start in place of A.J. Griffin (gout), who pitched in a minor-league game Friday. Martinez struck out seven without a walk.
Elvis Andrus had an RBI double and scored on Mike Napoli's single in the Texas sixth to tie the game 3-3.
Escobar started things with his ninth career leadoff home run, and Martinez also allowed Trout's two-run shot.
"Maybe the wrong location to throw that pitch. He was able to get on top of that," Martinez said of Trout's home run. "He hits the low ball fairly well. It seems to be his strength."
SELDOM SAC
Texas got its first run on Carlos Gomez's sacrifice fly in the first. That was Texas' first sacrifice fly this season and ended a streak of 49 games without one dating to Sept. 2, 2016. That streak had tied the 1967 Angels for the most in MLB history since the stat was re-introduced in 1954.
NOT THE CLOSER
Sam Dyson came off the DL (bruised right hand) earlier Friday and pitched for the first time since losing his closer role after his third blown save April 16. Dyson allowed an infield single to Trout in a scoreless ninth. "Look, I felt like Sam was much better," Banister said. "Nothing hard."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Angels: 1B C.J. Cron, who had fouled a pitch off his foot during the at-bat, left the game in the eighth inning running out an infield single. Scioscia said Cron was "hobbled pretty good."
Rangers: RHP Tyson Ross (thoracic outlet syndrome ) is going to pitch from a mound this weekend after dealing with back spasms. ... 3B Adrian Beltre (calf strain) went home to California to spend some time with his family and won't travel to Houston or Seattle, instead returning to Arlington for rehab.
UP NEXT
Angels: RHP Jesse Chavez allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings against Texas on April 12.
Rangers: RHP Yu Darvish got an extra day of rest after striking out eight in a win against Kansas City on Sunday.
