PHOENIX -- Tuffy Gosewich is known to be a very good defensive catcher. Offensive? Not so much.
On the day that Arizona signed another catcher to a minor league contract, Gosewich had one of his best hitting games, doubling three times to drive in a career-high four runs in the Diamondbacks' 11-0 rout of the San Diego Padres on Thursday night.
Gosewich had a terse response when asked if the signing of Jarrod Saltalamacchia served as incentive.
"I come to the park the same every day," Gosewich said. "It's the same approach I've had all year. I just had some better results tonight."
Paul Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo homered and doubled in Arizona's third straight victory.
Rubby De La Rosa (3-2) allowed three hits over seven innings for the Diamondbacks, striking out seven and walking two.
Odrisamer Despaigne (2-1) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in five innings for the Padres, who were shut out for the third time in four games.
"He couldn't really get any rhythm, couldn't get any consistency with his pitches," San Diego manager Bud Black said, "and the end result was what it was."
Arizona swept a doubleheader at Colorado on Wednesday and has scored 29 runs in its last three games.
The Diamondbacks had eight doubles, tying the franchise record.
Gosewich entered the game with a meek .208 batting average. The three doubles were his first extra-base hits of the season.
"He's had really good bats all year," Goldschmidt said. "I know the numbers haven't been there for him. He's hit a lot of line drives right at guys and had some tough breaks and stuff like that. We all know what he's capable of."
In two of the last three games, manager Chip Hale made the unorthodox move of putting the power-hitting Trumbo in the No. 2 spot. The Diamondbacks scored 13 and 11 runs, respectively in those two contests.
"It probably has very little or nothing to do with it," Trumbo said of his move up the order.
The Diamondbacks jumped on Despaigne for four runs in the first. Trumbo homered with one out. David Peralta singled and scored on a passed ball, Chris Owings singled in a run and Gosewich, who has six hits in the last two games, doubled in another.
Despaigne got the start in place of Brandon Morrow, who went on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with right shoulder inflammation. Despaigne had won both of his previous starts this year, one of them against Arizona. In San Diego on April 14, he limited the Diamondbacks to one run and two hits through seven innings in a 5-1 victory.
San Diego didn't get a hit after Yangervis Solarte's one-out double in the fourth.
ALONSO HURT
San Diego 1B Yonder Alonso was injured diving for a grounder in the eighth inning. He stopped the ball but had to throw with his glove hand after injuring his right shoulder. Black said the team would know more about the injury on Friday. Alonso is among the league leaders with a .333 batting average.
TRAINING ROOM
Padres: Black says there's a good chance RH reliever Shawn Kelley, sidelined with a left calf strain, will come off the 15-day DL on Friday, the first day he's eligible to return. ... Black says RH setup man Joaquin Benoit is fully recovered from right shoulder inflammation. Benoit had not pitched in the last five games and seven of the last eight.
Diamondbacks: RHP Archie Bradley, sidelined since being hit in the face by a line drive on April 28, is scheduled to return and start at Philadelphia on May 16. ... Patrick Corbin, coming back from Tommy John surgery, is to pitch an extended spring training game on Monday, then will be sent to the minors. He is expected to join the big league club in early May.
UP NEXT
Padres: RHP James Shields (3-0, 3.72 ERA) goes for his fourth consecutive victory, taking the mound in Game 2 of the four-game series in the desert. Shields is among the NL leaders in strikeouts with 48. He was the winning pitcher Sunday at Colorado, despite allowing five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Diamondbacks: RHP Jeremy Hellickson (1-3, 5.20), off to a rough start in his stint in Arizona, makes his second start of the season against the Padres. He took the loss in Arizona's 5-1 defeat at San Diego on April 14. Hellickson also was the losing pitcher in his last outing, 6-4 against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
