Daniel Hudson gave the Arizona Diamondbacks all he had.
Making his first major league start since June 2012, the right-hander pitched into the fourth inning Sunday before exiting with a two-run lead. Four relievers held on, finishing a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres.
"To get the adrenaline going before the game for a big league baseball game was pretty special," Hudson said.
Aaron Hill and A.J. Pollock homered for the Diamondbacks. Hudson, limited to 56 pitches in 3 1/3 scoreless innings, had been used exclusively out of the bullpen since returning late last season from two Tommy John surgeries.
"I haven't thrown more than 40 pitches in an outing all year," he said. "You could tell I was kind of getting tired."
Hudson allowed two hits and left with the bases loaded after striking out five and walking two. J.C. Ramirez, just called up from Triple-A Reno, escaped the jam unscathed.
"Daniel started off and did an unbelievable job," Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said. "He was electric at the start."
Ramirez (1-0) earned his first major league win, allowing a run and four hits while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings. He also pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth during the longest outing of his career.
"It was a very tough spot for him and he really battled to get out of that," Hale said. "He showed us a lot."
Oliver Perez, Evan Marshall and Addison Reed combined for three innings of scoreless relief. Reed earned his second save of the season.
Hill homered off Padres starter Andrew Cashner (1-6) in the second, and Pollock connected in the third.
Cashner went seven innings, allowing four hits and no walks with six strikeouts. His ERA dropped to 3.07.
"He has been the victim of poor run support overall," Padres manager Bud Black said.
Cashner acknowledged a couple of mistake pitches that led to the home runs.
"I thought the biggest thing today was my fastball command was really good," he said. "It's getting better and moving in the right direction. The run support is out of my control."
San Diego scored on Jedd Gyorko's two-out single in the sixth that drove in Will Venable, who singled and stole second. Venable had two hits on the day and six in the three-game series.
BACK IN BIGS
Ramirez last appeared in the majors with Philadelphia in 2013, when he allowed 20 earned runs in 24 innings. A few hours after an early flight got him to Phoenix on Sunday, he struck out Gyorko in the fourth and got Alexi Amarista to ground out to end the inning.
"There was a little bit of pressure on me but I tried to stay focused and throw strikes," Ramirez said.
