SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Garrett Richards knew his arm felt great this spring, and it sure looked that way on Tuesday.
The Angels' powerful right-hander twice hit 100 mph on the radar gun at Salt River Fields in Los Angeles' 5-3 victory over an Arizona Diamondbacks split squad.
Richards, who will be the Angels' opening day starter, also hit 99 mph four times in his 2 2/3 inning stint.
"I don't know what to think of doing that second outing in spring training," he said.
Richards said he couldn't recall hitting 100 since his college days but he downplayed doing it now.
"I feel good with where my arm is right," he said. "I typically throw hard so to hit 100 or whatever is just another thing I suppose. I mean, it's cool, but you throw 100 and somebody hits a homer it's not that cool. I'm more worried about location right now but I'm happy with where my arm's at as far as velocity and arm strength."
Richards allowed three runs on two hits, striking out four and walking one. He threw 51 pitches, 35 strikes.
"From the beginning I was attacking the zone," he said. "They put a couple of good swings on some balls first pitch. That's part of spring training, but I was very happy with the way my ball was moving and how I was commanding the zone."
Arizona starter Robbie Ray allowed two hits in three scoreless innings.
Carlos Perez and Ji-Man Choi each hit two-run homers off Arizona's Josh Collmenter in the Angels' four-run fourth inning. Perez also drove in a run with a ground out to third in the fourth.
Craig Gentry went 3 for 3 for the Angels and scored a run.
Socrates Brito, making a strong bid to be Arizona's fourth outfielder, had three hits, including an RBI double. Brandon Drury, who could make the Diamondbacks' opening day roster as a utility infielder, had two hits, including a run-scoring double.
STARTING TIME
Ray struck out three and walked one, throwing 50 pitches, 34 of them strikes.
"It felt great," he said. "All my pitches were working. I was pitching inside and the offspeed stuff I was happy with today. It was breaking in and out of the zone. I even flipped a little curveball in to Cliff Pennington there."
Ray has been strong in his attempt to nail down the fifth spot in the Arizona rotation. The 24-year-old left-hander has not allowed a run in his five innings of work this spring. He said he is not thinking about what's at stake this spring.
"I feel like it's just another day at the ballpark," Ray said. "I just go out and do my job. I know what I need to do and I just go out and do it."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Diamondbacks: Outfielder Yasmany Tomas sat out for the second straight day with a sore left knee.
UP NEXT
Angels: Angels' right-hander Jered Weaver makes his second start of spring training when the Los Angeles Dodgers are in Tempe on Wednesday.
Diamondbacks: Ace Zack Greinke, who signed a $206.5 million, six-year contract with Arizona in the offseason, makes his second spring training start when the Diamondbacks play the San Diego Padres in Scottsdale.
