Trevor Story got the sign from the dugout to run on contact.
Given how poorly the Atlanta Braves were playing, it was bound to work out just fine.
"I just tried to see the ball down (in the grass) and once I read the down angle, I was off," Story said. "I kind of slipped a little bit. I was gassed at that point, but I kind of emptied to tank going home there."
Story led off the ninth inning with a single, advanced to third on two wild pitches and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error to help the Colorado Rockies beat the bumbling Braves 4-3 on Saturday night.
The Rockies began the game 0-43 when trailing after seven innings.
"I think the guys know there's a sense of urgency, and these games are important the first two weeks after the (All-Star) break," manager Walt Weiss said.
Braves starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz began the eighth up 3-0, but let the first three batters reach and was chased by Nick Hundley's RBI single.
Hunter Cervenka's wild pitch scored Mark Reynolds, and second baseman Gordon Beckham's throwing error scored Hundley for a 3-all tie.
In the ninth, closer Jim Johnson (1-5) gave up a leadoff single to Story and threw wild pitches to two batters. Story scored when shortstop Erick Aybar bounced a throw on Reynolds' fielder's choice to A.J. Pierzynski, and ball bounced off the catcher's glove.
The Braves have thrown eight wild pitches and had four errors in the last two games, continuing a season-long theme. They rank last in the majors in runs scored and have baseball's worst home and overall records. They let two runs score on a two-base throwing error and a wild pitch in Friday's 11-2 loss.
"Folty pitched great. He deserved a better fate," Pierzynski said. "Last night we got (blown out) and tonight we had a three-run lead in the eighth and we just didn't get it done. There is no other way to put it."
Boone Logan (1-0) gave up one hit and one walk in the eighth.
Carlos Estevez retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his fifth save in eight chances.
Atlanta led 2-0 in the second on Pierzynski's first homer of the season. Foltynewicz's RBI single in the seventh put the Braves ahead 3-0.
Foltynewicz allowed four hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five in seven-plus innings. He retired 12 straight before Ryan Raburn singled in the fifth and was commanding his fastball between 97 and 100 mph.
But the Rockies, who began the game ranked second in NL runs per game, finally got going in the eighth.
Chad Bettis allowed six hits, three runs, three walks and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. The Rockies had won five of Bettis' last six starts despite his 5.79 ERA during that span.
EVERY FIVE GAMES
Interim manager Brian Snitker said rookie RHP Tyrell Jenkins will join the rotation Tuesday at Cincinnati.
Jenkins, acquired with Shelby Miller in the November 2014 trade that sent Jason Heyward and Jordan Walden to St. Louis, made an emergency start on July 6 for Julio Teheran. He gave up four hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings. In four relief appearances, he's 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Rockies: Raburn was in the lineup for the first time in the team's last seven games because of a sore quadriceps. He went 2 for 4. Raburn hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the ninth Friday.
Braves: RHP Arodys Vizcaino was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain. The struggling closer left Friday night's 11-2 loss to the after throwing three pitches in the ninth. It was his first appearance since he missed four straight games with an infection on his right elbow. ... LHP Eric O'Flaherty was reinstated from the DL to take Vizcaino's spot on the roster.
UP NEXT
Rockies: RHP Jon Gray (5-4) will make his first career start against Atlanta. He is 2-4 with a 4.63 ERA in eight road starts.
Braves: RHP Julio Teheran (3-8) is 4-1 with a 3.41 ERA in five career starts against Colorado.
