Stephen Drew to the plate with the bases loaded were highly unusual.
What he did next was something the New York Yankees hadn't experienced in 14 seasons.
Drew delivered a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning, and Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 Monday night for their first winning streak of the season.
Down 4-2, New York used a single, a walk and an infield hit to load the bases with two outs. Drew then stepped in for Brett Gardner, who hurt his right wrist in the first inning after being hit by a pitch from Wei-Yin Chen.
"I asked him each at-bat and he said he was OK," manager Joe Girardi said of Gardner. "Then, he came to me the last time and said, `We need a big hit and I don't know how well I can swing."
Girardi summoned Drew, who was 0 for 5 lifetime against Hunter.
"He's not a batter that is used to pinch hitting a lot and he's not used to DHing, so for him it's kind of different," Girardi said.
Drew sent a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right-center -- his second homer in two games and New York's first pinch-hit slam since Jorge Posada did it in 2001 against the Orioles.
"You got three guys on and I was not trying to do too much," Drew said. "I got ahead with a 3-1 count. I got in a good situation and it all worked out for the best."
Not for Hunter.
"The ball was up," he said. "A dink hit here, a dink hit there. And, you know, pop. Four runs."
X-rays on Gardner's wrist were negative.
"It's kind of a day-to-day thing," he said.
Chris Young and Mark Teixeira also homered for the Yankees, who have won two straight following a 1-4 start.
"That's what I like. They've been resilient so far," Girardi said. "We didn't get off to the start that we wanted. We didn't play well the first five games of the season. We played much better the last two. We've gotten big hits. We've capitalized on some mistakes the other clubs have made."
Adam Jones had three hits, including a home run, for Baltimore. Jones is 10 for 14 with three homers and seven RBIs in his last four games.
Michael Pineda (1-0) gave up five runs and nine hits with nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for the Yankees, who were 6-13 against Baltimore last year.
Former Oriole Andrew Miller got the last five outs for his second save.
Playing on the road for the first time since his return from a one-year drug suspension, New York's Alex Rodriguez was booed soundly before the game and prior to each trip to the plate.
He played errorless ball at third base -- his first time at the position since Sept. 10, 2013 -- but went 0 for 4 at the plate with two strikeouts.
After Young hit a solo shot in the second inning, the Orioles got RBI doubles from Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop in the bottom half.
Teixeira tied it with a towering fourth-inning drive into the left field seats. In the sixth, Jones hit a shot into the Baltimore bullpen for a 4-2 lead.
After Drew put the Yankees ahead, the Orioles got a run in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs before Chris Davis struck out for the fourth time.
