Ender Inciarte predicted his own starring role Friday night.
Inciarte had a game-ending single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"I told (David) Peralta I was going to get the at-bat to end the game so I just was waiting for that at-bat," said Inciarte, who had two hits. "It worked out for me."
Pinch-hitter Cliff Pennington drew a one-out walk and went to second on a wild pitch. J.P. Howell (0-1) then walked A.J. Pollock with Pennington stealing third base as ball four went into the dirt.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly called in Yasiel Puig from the outfield to play third base in a five-man, drawn-in infield but Inciarte hit a grounder just past first baseman Adrian Gonzalez inside the line to bring home Pennington.
"It comes down to the point of hitting it through the infield," said Arizona manager Chip Hale, "hit it through somebody if you have to."
The key for Arizona, Mattingly said, was Pennington stealing third base.
"With Inciarte and you are in first and second and you are at least still in a force situation," Mattingly said. "You are probably not going to double up Inciarte unless he hits a rocket but then you're going to get to Goldschmidt and deal with him. But when he (Pennington) steals third, that hurt us."
Paul Goldschmidt had three hits including his first home run since July 30 for the Diamondbacks, who had dropped 15 of 19 against Los Angeles a year ago.
Yasmani Grandal homered and Jimmy Rollins added a two-run double for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers threatened in the ninth against Addison Reed when Carl Crawford and Juan Uribe hit consecutive one-out singles. But Joc Pederson hit a fly to the warning track in right and Andre Ethier hit a sharp grounder to first to end the inning.
Goldschmidt gave the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead in the third off Brett Anderson with a drive into the pool area beyond the right-field fence.
Grandal made it 3-1 in the fourth with a homer onto the walkway beyond the center field fence, and Rollins tied the game the following inning with a two-run double to the gap in right-center field against Chase Anderson.
Anderson went five innings, allowing three runs and five hits. He walked three and struck out six, five coming in the first three innings.
Brett Anderson allowed three runs on five hits over six innings with a walk and four strikeouts in his Dodgers debut.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Dodgers: RHP Kenley Jansen played catch before Friday's game and remains on an every-other-day schedule as he recovers from surgery to remove a growth from the fifth metatarsal in his left foot. Jansen remains two weeks away from throwing off a mound.
RUDY IN THE HOUSE
Actor Sean Astin, who played the title role in the film "Rudy," threw out the first pitch.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
The Dodgers' Brett Anderson and Diamondbacks' Chase Anderson were the first pitchers with the same surname to start the same game since Cleveland's Robert Hernandez and Seattle's Felix Hernandez faced off on April 21, 2012. The last matchup involving a Dodgers' pitcher was June 20, 2009, when the Angels' Jered Weaver started against his brother Jeff.
CONTAINING GONZALEZ
Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez singled to left to raise his batting average to .786 in the first, walked in the fourth and was intentionally walked in the fifth. But the Diamondbacks challenged him his last two at-bats, letting left-handers pitch to Yasiel Puig to get to the left-handed Gonzalez with success. Gonzalez grounded out in the eighth with the bases empty and hit into an inning-ending double play in the 10th, dropping his average back to .688 (11 of 16). It marked only the second time this season Gonzalez had been retired in consecutive plate appearances, the first time in the same game.
UP NEXT
Dodgers: RHP Clayton Kershaw will make his second start of the season, against the Diamondbacks. Kershaw had a no-decision on opening day after allowing three runs and six hits over six innings. Kershaw is 10-7 with a 2.45 ERA in 21 starts against Arizona but was 3-1 with a pedestrian 3.47 ERA last season versus the Diamondbacks.
Diamondbacks: RHP Archie Bradley will make his major league debut against the Dodgers. Bradley, rated the Diamondbacks' top prospect the past two seasons by MLB.com, pitched his way into the rotation this spring, giving Arizona the opportunity to trade RHP Trevor Cahill to Atlanta on April 2.
