Hector Santiago watched the Los Angeles Angels knock around Carlos Rodon, and then went to work himself.
Santiago matched a career high with 10 strikeouts over seven crisp innings, and the Angels blanked the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Monday night.
Kole Calhoun, Andrelton Simmons and Geovany Soto hit consecutive RBI singles during a five-run first, matching the Angels' season high for runs in an entire game. Mike Trout scored on a throwing error by first baseman Jose Abreu, and Johnny Giavotella capped the opening outburst with another RBI single.
"It was beautiful," Santiago said. "Anytime you can go out there and you can have one on the board you're kind of excited because you've got a little space to breathe."
Rodon (1-2) got only one out before he was replaced by Jake Petricka. The No. 3 pick in the 2014 amateur draft allowed six hits and walked two in the shortest of his 29 major league appearances.
"I felt good coming out, but it just wasn't there," Rodon said. "No command, no nothing. I just didn't make it happen."
Simmons and C.J. Cron each had three hits as the Angels rebounded from a weekend sweep by the Twins. Simmons extended his hitting streak to 11 games, equaling a career high, and Cron busted out of a 4-for-40 start to the season after he was pushed down to eighth in the lineup.
"I didn't think too much into it. I'm still in the lineup, I can't complain," Cron said. "As long as you're in the lineup you want to help the team win, and that's kind of my mindset, no matter how rough the start's been."
Los Angeles also improved to 4-3 on a 10-game trip to Oakland, Minnesota and Chicago.
The White Sox opened a seven-game homestand with their third consecutive loss after an 8-2 start to the season. Jimmy Rollins doubled and walked twice, but Jose Abreu and Adam Eaton had the only other hits for slumping Chicago.
Santiago (1-0), traded from the White Sox to the Angels in a three-team deal in 2013 that moved Eaton to Chicago, yielded two hits and walked three.
"That was the best stuff I've seen Hector have since he's been with us," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said.
Greg Mahle worked the eighth and Mike Morin finished the three-hitter for Los Angeles' first shutout of the season. The White Sox have scored 11 runs in their last six games.
"We need to get this offense going," Eaton said. "Again, there's a ton of talent. We all know that. I think that's the reason we've come up with a question mark is because we know this offense can produce and it will."
Cron singled home Calhoun in the third and Simmons in the eighth for his first two RBI of the season.
SMOOTH TRANSITION
Simmons increased his batting average to .275 with his second multihit game of the season. It was his first three-hit game since Sept. 10 for Atlanta against the New York Mets.
The 26-year-old Simmons, a two-time Gold Glove winner at shortstop, was traded to Los Angeles in November.
"I think he's feeling more and more comfortable every day," Scioscia said.
ROSTER MOVE
The White Sox optioned reserve outfielder J.B. Shuck to Triple-A Charlotte after the game. They plan to call up a pitcher on Tuesday.
"With the way tonight's game went, you need another arm," manager Robin Ventura said. "I think the bullpen did a great job of coming in and being able to take care of the innings to get through it."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Angels LHP Tyler Skaggs, coming back from Tommy John surgery, is scheduled to throw four innings for Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. He had been limited to three innings in each of his first two outings with the Bees.
UP NEXT
White Sox RHP Mat Latos (2-0, 0.75 ERA) and Angels RHP Matt Shoemaker (1-1, 6.00) take the mound for the second game of the series. Latos has allowed one run in 12 innings this season, and Shoemaker pitched six scoreless innings in his previous start at Oakland on Wednesday.
