TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona rookie Archie Bradley pitched five solid innings while C.J. Wilson struggled as the split-squad Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 Friday.
Bradley, a candidate to make the rotation out of spring, lowered his spring ERA to 2.20 after allowing one run and six hits.Bradley was the Diamondbacks' top pick in the 2011 draft. He made his third spring start and fifth appearance overall.Wilson allowed nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs, with only one earned.Wilson was 13-10 with a 4.51 ERA last year, and was pulled in the first inning of the Angels' loss to Kansas City in the AL playoffs. The Diamondbacks scored five times in the second inning, a lot of it because of shoddy defense. Nick Evans reached on an infield single off the glove of third baseman Kyle Kubitza and moved to third on a walk and shortstop Erick Aybar's error. Kubitza also made an error in the inning.A.J. Pollock hit a two-run single, Wilson walked a batter and Tomas Yasmany reached when a short fly ball to right field fell between two defenders for another run.Roberto Baldoquin homered for the Angels in his first spring training at-bat. The 20-year-old Cuban connected off Randall Delgado in the eighth."He's got a nice approach to the ball," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He has a real easy fluid swing. That ball jumped off his bat."STARTING TIMEDiamondbacks: Bradley, 29-18 with a 3.14 ERA over four seasons in the minors, said he isn't thinking about making Arizona's rotation."The thoughts of making this team, they're not really in my head," Bradley said. "I just control what I can out there and let that speak for itself. Whatever happens, happens."He faced a bulk of what is to be the Angels' opening day lineup, including AL MVP Mike Trout and Albert Pujols."To be the best you've got to beat the best," he said. "I wouldn't want to face any other lineup but their top guys, especially toward the end of spring as it's getting closer to the season. It's good for me."Angels: Wilson's 2014 season ended on a down note and he recently had his picture on Angel Stadium removed."It's the big leagues," he said. "You lose 10 or 11 games, you're not going to be the face of a franchise."Wilson's spring has been slowed by an illness and a sore knee. He got up to 88 pitches Friday. Scioscia said he would likely try to put Wilson into a controlled environment to get him into the sixth and seventh innings before the Angels break camp.TRAINER'S ROOMAngels: RHP Garrett Richards will throw five innings in a minor league game Saturday. The Angels were hoping to activate him on April 12, but Scioscia said Richards experienced some fatigue after his last outing and his return could be pushed back. After moving in and out of the Angels' rotation for two seasons, Richards had a breakthrough season in 2014 as a starter. He was 13-4 before his season was cut short Aug. 20 in Boston when he tore his left patellar tendon while covering first base.UP NEXTDiamondbacks: RHP Jeremy Hellickson will face the Royals on Saturday.Angels: RHP Matt Shoemaker, coming off his best spring start, will face the Los Angeles Dodgers.
