SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Odrisamer Despaigne took advantage of Brandon Morrow's blister in their competition for the last spot in the San Diego Padres' rotation.
Despaigne allowed one run and seven hits over five innings and Brett Wallace hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Padres to a 3-3 tie in 10 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.Morrow was slated to start but was scratched Wednesday because of a blister on his right finger. Despaigne took the mound instead and struck out four, walked two, hit a batter and lowered his spring ERA to 2.12."Odrisamer threw the ball well," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He was a little spotty with his control but he got results. I saw a lot of positives."Morrow has pitched to a 4.26 ERA, though that number was inflated by his last start where he surrendered five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings."These are good decisions to have," Black said. "The quality of talent on the 40-man roster and the minor-league invitees is as strong as it's ever beenYonder Alonso had three hits for the Padres.Chase Anderson, expected to be Arizona's fourth starter, gave up one run and six hits over six innings in his longest outing of the spring. He walked two and struck out four."His stuff wasn't great but he battled," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. "He did a good job of changing speeds when he had too. He made good pitches against a quality, major-league lineup."Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the second as A.J. Pollock's single drove in Tuffy Gosewich. San Diego tied it in the third when Wil Myers singled, went to third on a single by Alfonso and scored on Matt Kemp's RBI grounder.Pollock had an RBI single in the sixth against Padres reliever Kevin Quackenbush for a 2-1 lead. The Diamondbacks added a run in the seventh before Wallace tied the game 3-3 with a two-run homer to center off right-hander Allen Webster.---STARTING TIMEPadres: In 17 innings over five appearances, Despaigne has given up 21 hits, walked five and struck out 11. His five-inning stint against Arizona was the longest by any Padres pitcher this spring. "I like the high fastballs he threw to some of the power hitters," Black said.Diamondbacks: Anderson, who was 9-7 with a 4.01 ERA over 21 starts a year ago, appears to be slotted behind Josh Collmenter, Rubby de la Rosa and Jeremy Hellickson in the Arizona rotation. He has allowed only three earned runs in 14 2/3 innings across four appearances. "I feel like I'm right on track for whatever happens," Anderson said.TRAINING ROOMPadres: San Diego placed C Tim Federowicz on the 60-day disabled list because of right knee surgery. Federowicz was moved to make room for RHP Jandel Gustave, who was claimed off waivers Thursday morning from the Kansas City Royals. "I don't think we have any obligations to Mr. Gustave except to give him a look and see what he's got in that arm," Black said.Diamondbacks: LHP Patrick Corbin and RHP David Hernandez, both coming back from Tommy John surgery, are scheduled to throw bullpen sessions on Thursday. Both threw 20-pitch sessions on Tuesday, their first of the spring.UP NEXTPadres: RHP James Shields will start Friday at home against Colorado.Diamondbacks: RHP Archie Bradley will start Friday on the road against the Los Angeles Angels in one split-squad game, while opening-day starter Josh Collmenter starts at home against Cleveland.
