PEORIA, Ariz. -- Mark Trumbo went 3 for 3 with a double and drove in two runs, leading Archie Bradley and the Arizona Diamondbacks over the San Diego Padres 7-5 Saturday.
Trumbo had two singles and a double, raising his average to .406."By and large, I think I've done a decent job this spring," Trumbo said. "Everyone wants to get off to a good start. You don't' want to put yourself in a hole. Hopefully, I'll be able to carry this over (to the season)."Bradley, a highly touted prospect for years, gave up two unearned runs and five hits four innings. He walked none and struck out three.Bradley still is a candidate for a spot in the rotation, manager Chip Hale said."Every outing is a big test for me, but especially against a team that we're going to be playing numerous times in the NL West," said Bradley, who said both his fastball and curve were effective. "That's a lineup I'm going to face during the years. To face those guys ... was big for me."Ender Inciarte had three hits, scored twice, drove in a run and stole a base for Arizona. David Peralta doubled twice.Tommy Medica hit his third spring homer for the Padres and Will Middlebrooks had a two-run single."He's on a nice spring training run," Padres manager Bud Black said of Medica. "He's swinging the bat well."STARTING TIMEDiamondbacks: Hale, asked if Bradley is a candidate for a starting spot, said, "If he's here, he's still in the mix."Padres: Brandon Morrow, a candidate for the final spot in the rotation, allowed five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. Another candidate for the final rotation spot, Odrisamer Despaigne, allowed two runs, one earned, in 3 1/3 innings."It's still close," Black said. "They're both very good pitchers, major league pitchers. We'll continue to evaluate and watch them. It's probably a better question to answer late in March."TRAINER'S ROOMDiamondbacks: Reliever Brad Ziegler is scheduled to throw in Cactus League game for first time Sunday in his comeback from microfracture knee surgery. ... Reliever Addison Reed threw batting practice Friday as part of his comeback from shoulder soreness. He will throw one more batting practice before appearing in a spring game, Hale said.Padres: Casey Kelly, continuing his comeback from Tommy John surgery, pitched one scoreless inning in his first spring appearance. Kelly had the surgery two years ago and was limited to 20 minor league innings in 2014. He got off to a slow start this spring because of a groin problem."That was great," Black said of Kelly's performance. "He was excited to pitch. It's been a long time for Casey in major league game."UP NEXTDiamondbacks: Robbie Ray is set to take the mound Sunday vs. the Colorado Rockies.Padres: James Shields is scheduled to start Sunday in Mesa against the Chicago Cubs.
