CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Stephen Drew had a two-run single and Chris Young added a run-scoring double in a seven-run fifth inning, and the New York Yankees romped past the Philadelphia Phillies 10-0 in a game called in the top of the sixth because of rain.
Michael Pineda gave up five hits in five impressive innings for New York. He struck out five. Pineda has a 1.32 ERA in four starts this spring. He has 17 strikeouts and one walk in 13 2/3 innings. The Yankees began the fifth with five straight hits off Jake Diekman. Diekman only got out one of the eight batters he faced, Carlos Beltran on a flyball to right field."Anything that was over the plate they hit really hard," Diekman said. "I got behind in counts. ... Every strike that I threw they pretty much took a good swing on it. ... That was embarrassing."The game was called for rain with two outs and the Yankees having scored three times in the sixth.for the Phillies, top pitching prospect Aaron Nola pitched three scoreless innings in a major league cameo. The 21-year-old Nola, the seventh overall pick in last June's draft, struck out four of the final seven batters he faced, including Alex Rodriguez."Good arm," Rodriguez said. "Power slider. Power changeup. I think he has a bright future. ... The Phillies should be very excited about him."STARTING TIMEPhillies: Right-hander Jonathan Papelbon was summoned into start in a last-minute decision with rain expected in the forecast. The Phillies wanted to make sure their All-Star closer was able to pitch. Papelbon struck out Brett Gardner to begin a scoreless inning. Papelbon hasn't allowed a run in six of his seven games this spring. He has struck out six while walking one in seven innings. Prior to Friday, Papelbon hadn't started a game since March 17, 2007, also in spring training, while with the Boston Red Sox.TRAINER'S ROOMPhillies: Outfielder Domonic Brown hasn't played in a game since March 19 while nursing left achilles tendinitis. Brown took regular batting practice with the team on Friday, but his availability for opening day, on April 6 against the Boston Red Sox, is in jeopardy as manager Ryne Sandberg said he's "coming slowly." "There's a lot of work to be done in a short amount of time so that could be unlikely," Sandberg said. ... Third baseman Cody Asche missed his second straight game. He was pulled from Thursday's lineup with back tightness. He could return to the lineup on Sunday.UP NEXTPhillies: travel to Fort Myers to play the Minnesota Twins. Jerome Williams is scheduled to start opposite Twins right-hander Ervin Santana.Yankees: return to Tampa to play host to the Baltimore Orioles. Yankees right-hander Bryan Mitchell will pitch opposite Orioles right-hander Tyler Wilson.
