Kevin Cash never thought about letting his rookie starter go out for the seventh inning.
Why with such a strong bullpen?
Matt Andriese and three relievers combined on a three-hitter, Jake Elmore hit a two-run homer and the Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Saturday.
"Worked out kind of perfectly today," Cash said.
Andriese (3-2) retired his first 11 batters before allowing his lone baserunner, coming on a two-out single in the fourth by Xander Bogaerts. He struck out five in a career-high six innings as the Rays rebounded from a 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Red Sox Friday night.
"On a day where Andriese threw a lot of fastballs at us, for a lot of strikes, we never got anything going offensively," Boston manager John Farrell said.
After Jake McGee threw a perfect seventh, Kevin Jepsen gave up a solo homer in the eighth to Alejandro De Aza, who went deep for the second time in the last three games. Brad Boxberger allowed a single in a scoreless ninth for his 20th save.
"We have a lot of trust in our bullpen," Andriese said. "The big three back there, we have a lot of confidence in those guys."
Wade Miley (7-7) gave up two runs, five hits, two walks and struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings for Boston. The left-hander entered 3-0 with an 0.47 ERA in three previous starts against Tampa Bay.
Asdrubal Cabrera tripled leading off the fifth and scored on Elmore's one-out drive that cleared a low fence near the 315-foot marker in the left field corner to put the Rays up 2-0. Elmore had been hitless in his previous 12 at-bats.
"When I hit it, I didn't even think home run," Elmore said. "All I thought was, `please stay fair,' because I knew it was at least getting down (uncaught). Thankfully it did."
Miley had thrown 16 scoreless innings at Tropicana Field before Elmore's shot.
Rene Rivera made it 3-0 on a seventh-inning homer off Matt Barnes, who was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before the game. Evan Longoria had a solo shot in the eighth.
Tampa Bay tied a team-record with its 10th consecutive win against a left-handed starter. The Rays also did it in 2004.
Boston's Mookie Betts had his career-best 13-game hitting streak end after going 0 for 4. It was the longest streak by a Red Sox since Jacoby Ellsbury had a 19-game streak in 2013.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Red Sox: LF Hanley Ramirez (left hand), who missed his third straight game, is not ready to swing a bat.
Rays: LHP Matt Moore (elbow surgery) made what may have been his final rehab start for Triple-A Durham against Columbus. ... RHP Jake Odorizzi (oblique) threw 51 pitches in batting practice and could make a minor league start Thursday. ... 1B James Loney (broken left middle finger) took BP in a cage.
MOVING DAY
Red Sox: To make room for Barnes on the roster, INF Travis Shaw was optioned to Pawtucket.
Rays: INF Tim Beckham (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day DL and optioned to Triple-A Durham. Beckham is expected to get some playing time in the outfield. ... R.J. Harrison will become senior advisor of scouting and baseball operations in mid-July. Rob Metzler is replacing Harrison as director of amateur scouting.
SLAM DUNK
Golden State center Marreese Speights threw the ceremonial first pitch.
OL' DAYS
On Turn Back the Clock Day, the Rays wore a hypothetical 1979 uniform. The Red Sox used their 1975 road uniforms.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: RHP Justin Masterson (2-2), Sunday's starter, is 2-8 with a 6.93 ERA in 15 games against Tampa Bay.
Rays: RHP Chris Archer (9-4) will look to improve on his 1-5 record against Boston Sunday. He has a 5.18 ERA over eight starts.
