PHILADELPHIA -- The Baltimore Orioles only needed two homers this time.
A night after setting a club record with eight home runs in a defeat of Philadelphia, Chris Parmelee homered for the third time in two games and Travis Snider also went deep as Baltimore handed the Phillies their ninth straight defeat, 6-4 on Wednesday night.
"I'm seeing the ball well right now, and just trying to keep it simple and kind of ride the wave as long as you can," Parmelee said.
The Orioles still finished six homers shy of the club record they set in Tuesday's 19-3 victory over Philadelphia. David Lough doubled and had two RBI for Baltimore, which won its 12th game in the last 14.
"Usually in April and May, that's like fighters in early rounds," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "Sooner or later, you've got to start throwing punches."
Ubaldo Jimenez (5-3) struck out eight and walked none while giving up four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. Zach Britton pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save.
"When you go against a team that is struggling, you have to put your foot on the pedal and give everything you have," Jimenez said. "We know because we've been there. The last few weeks, we've been putting everything together."
Freddy Galvis homered and Ben Revere had a pair of hits, including a triple for Philadelphia, which has lost 19 of 22 to sink to 23 games under .500. Philadelphia has been outscored 57-18 during the skid while getting outhomered 19-2.
"It's surprising," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of the club's record.
The Phillies returned home after a historically bad road trip in which they lost all eight games, marking the first time since their inaugural season in 1883 that they went winless on a road trip of at least eight games.
They didn't do any better at home. At least the bullpen phone stayed on the hook this time.
Adding to the embarrassment of Tuesday's blowout in Baltimore, Sandberg was unable to get a reliever warming up to spell outfielder Jeff Francoeur, filling in as a reliever, because the bullpen phone was off the hook. Pitching coach Bob McClure ended up waiving a white towel to get the bullpen's attention. In the end, no one was called in to relieve Francoeur, who threw 48 pitches in two innings, prompting Chase Utley to bark at McClure during a mound visit. Francoeur was out of the starting lineup Wednesday and grounded into a game-ending double play as a pinch-hitter.
"It's a mishap that can happen, but can never happen again," Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said before Wednesday's game.
Parmelee, who was called up from Triple-A on Tuesday, homered off Kevin Correia (0-1) with two outs in the first inning. Parmelee had two of Baltimore's eight home runs while matching a career high with four hits Tuesday. Utley tied it in the bottom of the frame when he scored on a wild pitch.
Baltimore tallied four unearned runs in the fourth inning that started when Galvis committed his 10th error of the season when he couldn't field Snider's grounder to short.
"I don't think he should have 10 errors," Sandberg said. "That's a play I've seen him make."
Matt Wieters and Jimenez had RBI singles sandwiched around Lough's two-run double.
The Phillies had a chance to get back in the game in the bottom half when Maikel Franco singled and Ryan Howard doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. But three straight strikeouts, by Domonic Brown, Cameron Rupp and Cody Asche, erased the threat.
"Those things add up," Sandberg said.
Snider led off the fifth with a homer to right off Correia to make it 6-1, leading to cheers from a large contingent of Orioles fans among the 26,162 fans in attendance.
Correia, who was making his second start for the Phillies and third in the big leagues since last August, allowed six runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in five innings with four strikeouts and a walk.
Jimenez retired 10 straight before Rupp's one-out single in the seventh. Asche followed by beating the defensive shift with a bunt single before Galvis pulled the Phillies within 6-4 with his second homer of the season, ending Jimenez's night.
SANDBERG'S STATUS
In spite of at least one local columnist calling for major changes to the Phillies, Amaro gave Sandberg a vote of confidence before the game.
"I come every day to try to grind out wins and improve the guys," Sandberg said. "That's my mentality."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Orioles: OF Adam Jones (shoulder) missed his second straight game. Manager Buck Showalter said before the game that Jones was available to pinch hit.
Phillies: RHP Jerome Williams was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring. Williams was injured trying to cover home plate in the first inning on Tuesday. The Phillies recalled right-hander Hector Neris from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace Williams.
UP NEXT
Orioles: RHP Bud Norris (2-4, 8.29) looks to complete the sweep of the Phillies in the second of two in Philadelphia of the four-game home-and-home set. Norris has received a staff-best 3.50 runs of support over his eight starts.
Phillies: RHP Sean O'Sullivan (1-5, 5.08) is winless with an 8.64 ERA in four games, three starts, against Baltimore.
