Tyler Anderson
started Sunday with 14 people yelling loudly for him at Coors Field.
When he walked off the field after an impressive major league debut,
32,932 other fans joined his personal cheering section.
Anderson pitched into the seventh inning in his first big league game, Mark Reynolds homered and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Sunday.
Anderson was called up from the minors Saturday and told later that day he would start Sunday against the Padres. He said the moment was made more special by the fact that he missed 2015 with a broken left elbow and started this season on the disabled list with an oblique strain.
"It's unbelievable," he said. "It took a long time to get here; it's that much more enjoyable."
Anderson said the 14 family members and former coaches from Oregon he had sitting above the bullpen helped calm him before the game, and he could hear them throughout the afternoon.
"I could have heard them all the way back to Las Vegas," he said.
San Diego starter Christian Friedrich struck out a season-high nine and allowed only two hits and an unearned run against his former team. Matt Kemp had three hits for the Padres, who fell to 0-10 on Sundays and 1-20 in the final game of a series this season.
"I had a lot of expectations for Christian today," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He pitched a tremendous game and deserved a win. He should have been out of the sixth inning with a double-play ball that we didn't pick up for him. He could easily have been pitching in the eighth."
Anderson, the 20th pick in the 2011 amateur draft, did his part in holding down San Diego's offense. He allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings, struck out six and didn't walk a batter.
"It was Tyler Anderson's day to step up like that," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Talk about a tough assignment, to come in here and pitching like that. It's big-time stuff."
Friedrich's bases-loaded walk to Ryan Raburn after shortstop Alexei Ramirez misplayed a potential double-play ball gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead in the sixth. San Diego tied it on Jon Jay's RBI single off winner Gonzalez Germen (2-0).
Reynolds homered against Kevin Quackenbush (3-3) leading off the seventh.
"That guy stays away a lot, throws a lot of fastballs up in the zone, so I just tried to shoot something over that way and got under it," Reynolds said.
Boone Logan got one out for his first save since 2012.
The matchup between Friedrich and Anderson marked the third time two Rockies first-round picks faced each other. Friedrich was the 25th selection in 2008 and made his big league debut in 2012. He began his career as a starter but moved to the bullpen and made a career-high 68 appearances for Colorado last season.
He nearly upstaged Anderson in a rare pitching duel at Coors Field. The game was scoreless into the sixth and neither pitcher allowed a baserunner from the second through fourth innings, with Friedrich setting down 15 straight batters and Anderson retiring 10 in a row.
"Going into it, I felt pretty rusty," Friedrich said. "Once the game started, everything started clicking."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Padres: 3B Yangervis Solarte did not start after leaving Saturday's game with a left thumb injury, but he pinch-hit in the ninth inning. "He feels good," Green said. "Usually those things are 48 to 72 hours." ... Green said RHP Andrew Cashner (strained neck) is feeling better and has better range of motion.
Rockies: C Tony Wolters (concussion) was being evaluated after making two rehab starts in the minors. Weiss said Wolters is back with the team and could be activated Tuesday.
MOMENT OF SILENCE
The Rockies held a moment of silence before the national anthem for victims in the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.
UP NEXT
Padres: RHP Colin Rea (3-2, 4.74 ERA) will make his 12th start of the season and third since being recalled from Triple-A El Paso on June 2 when he faces Miami on Monday. Rea is 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA in his last nine starts for San Diego.
Rockies: LHP Jorge De La Rosa (2-4, 8.81) opens a two-game series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday. It will be his first start since May 24. He was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in three relief appearances since his last start.
