GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Micah Johnson belted a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox tied the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-3 on Monday.
Paul Goldschmidt drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Tuffy Gosewich and Danny Worth added run-scoring singles for the Diamondbacks. A.J. Pollock went 3 for 3, while Brandon Drury went 2 for 3.Arizona led 2-0 in the seventh before Trayce Thompson had sacrifice fly and Juan Diaz homered to tie it.The White Sox had a chance to win it when J.B. Shuck followed Johnson's homer with a single, then advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by Enrique Burgos. But Diaz grounded out and Courtney Hawkins flew out to end the game.White Sox closer David Robertson made his first White Sox and Cactus League appearance, allowing one hit but no runs in the third inning.Robertson, who signed as a free agent after seven seasons with the Yankees, said he felt no differently wearing a White Sox uniform and, if there is a difference in spring training between Florida and Arizona, "I haven't noticed it."The Diamondbacks are now 5-1-1 on the spring while the Sox are 2-3-1.---STARTING TIME:Diamondbacks: Chase Anderson, vying for a spot in the rotation, blanked the White Sox over 2 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out three."My fastball command was so-so . but overall I felt pretty good," said Anderson, who went 9-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 21 starts last year as a 26-year-old rookie."As long as you're healthy in spring training . throwing the ball pretty decent, I feel like that's a good thing."White Sox: Jose Quintana, the likely No. 3 starter, allowed one run and three hits in two innings while striking out three. Quintana, who has a 24-24 record and 3.50 ERA the past three seasons for the Sox, said he needed work out of the stretch because he retired all six batters he faced in his first outing.TRAINER'S TABLE:Diamondbacks: Closer Addison Reed is about ready to start throwing and "should be ready for the season if everything progresses like it has," manager Chip Hale said. Reed has not pitched because of a right shoulder strain. Also, pitcher Daniel Hudson showed no ill effects from his two-inning stint Sunday, Hale indicated. Hudson is a candidate to either start or relieve. He underwent two Tommy John surgeries before making three appearances in relief late last season.White Sox: Reliever Jesse Crain threw 30 pitches in his first live BP of the spring. The right-hander missed last season while recovering from biceps surgery, and then agreed to a minor league deal with Chicago in January."I was flying open a little bit, but that's expected for me, the first time going out and facing hitters," Crain said. "It's been a long time. Yeah, another step forward and hopefully another climb the next time I do it."O'BRIEN'S CHANCES:Arizona catcher Pete O'Brien, acquired in the July trade that sent Martin Prado to the New York Yankees, has impressed Hale. Unlike the Yankees, Hale said the Diamondbacks view him only at that position."We want to see him every day at catcher," Hale said. "That said, he has the ability . to play other positions. But we see him as an everyday catcher at some point in his career. Is it right now? Maybe it is. We don't know."He's improved a lot. We feel his receiving and blocking is major league ready now. We just want to see him more consistent throwing the ball."UP NEXTDiamondbacks: Trevor Cahill, a likely member of the rotation, will start in Mesa on Tuesday against Oakland's Sonny Gray.White Sox: Tyler Danish will start Tuesday in Surprise against Kansas City's Jeremy Guthrie.
