Paulsen's 2-run single lifts Rockies over Diamondbacks, 5-4

Play
DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies struggled to get the big hit with runners on base all game. Down to their last outs, they finally came through.
Pinch-hitter Ben Paulsen hit a two-out, two-run single and the Rockies rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Monday night.
Charlie Blackmon had three hits and finished a home run short of the cycle for the Rockies, who snapped a three-game home losing streak.
The Rockies were held in check by Arizona starter Robbie Ray and two relievers before rallying in the ninth off closer Brad Ziegler (0-3).
"We've done that all year," Paulsen said. "It almost seems like when the closers come in we kind of step our game up and everybody hones in. Our lineup is dangerous."
Colorado was 0 for 15 with runners in scoring position when their bats came alive in the ninth. After Jose Reyes' double down the right-field line put runners at second and third, Nolan Arenado hit a two-run double off the top of the fence in left to pull the Rockies within a run. One out later Ziegler's errant throw to first on DJ LeMahieu's comebacker put the winning run at second.
"That was definitely the worst pitch I threw," Ziegler said of Arenado's hit. "But even then, I had a chance on the chopper back to me and lost it in the lights, believe it or not. Then when I went to pick it up, I rolled my left ankle so I tried to spin and throw on one foot. It probably wasn't the smartest decision. I should've just ate the ball and kept it first and second."
Nick Hundley walked to load the bases, finishing Ziegler. Matt Reynolds came on and Paulsen sent an 0-2 pitch up the middle to give Colorado the win.
"The guys kept fighting," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "It seemed like we had some missed opportunities throughout but guys kept fighting and Benny gets a big hit."
It was his second walk-off hit of the season.
"I dug myself a hole, he left one up and I handled it," Paulsen said.
Simon Castro (2-0) got the win after two hitless innings of relief.
A.J. Pollock homered and Chris Owings had three hits for the Diamondbacks.
Ray allowed one run and five hits and tied a season high with eight strikeouts but remains winless since beating Texas on July 7.
Ray threw 102 pitches while working out of a couple of big jams. In the fourth he stranded a runner at third with one out and in the fifth he retired Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez after issuing two one-out walks.
He faltered in the sixth when he gave up a single and hit a batter with two outs. Randall Delgado came on and got pinch-hitter Kyle Parker to fly out to end the inning.
Colorado's Chad Bettis allowed four runs and 11 hits in his second start since coming off the disabled list. He allowed three runs in the third on Ender Inciarte's RBI single and Pollock's two-run homer.
Colorado got one back in the bottom of the inning when Blackmon led off with a triple and scored on Reyes' groundout.
Paul Goldschmidt doubled and scored on David Peralta's single in the fifth to make it 4-1.
Ziegler, who had converted 22 consecutive save opportunities, couldn't close it out.
"It was a win we felt like we should've had," Pollock said. "We could've scrapped (for) more runs. You never want to go that many innings without scoring runs. It just didn't feel great going into that last inning, and it came back to haunt us."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Diamondbacks: 2B Aaron Hill didn't play for the second straight game due to a hand injury. Manager Chip Hale said Hill could be back for Tuesday's doubleheader.
Rockies: 1B Justin Morneau (concussion symptoms) is on a rehab assignment with Double-A New Britain and could rejoin the team Thursday. If he checks out, Morneau, who hasn't played since mid-May, could be activated at that time.
UP NEXT
Diamondbacks: LHP Patrick Corbin (3-3, 3.78) will get the ball in the first game of Tuesday's split doubleheader. RHP Rubby De La Rosa (11-6, 4.46) will pitch the second game.
Rockies: LHP Yohan Flande (3-1, 4.09) starts the first game while RHP Kyle Kendrick (4-12, 6.43) will return from the 15-day DL for the second game. Kendrick has been out since Aug. 1 with right shoulder inflammation.

Miller's hard-luck streak reaches 19 starts without a win

Play
ATLANTA -- Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez says he's never seen anything like Shelby Miller's tough run of luck as a starting pitcher.
"The only thing I can explain is the way Shelby has behaved through all this, the way he's gone out and battled through everything we've asked him to do, and he doesn't flinch," Gonzalez said. "I hope that continues."
Martin Prado and Justin Bour each had an RBI double in the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins extended Miller's winless streak to 19 starts with a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night.
Miller, an All-Star with a sparkling 2.56 ERA, began the night with the worst support in the majors, and the Braves, losers in six straight and 13 of 14, stayed true to form.
Beginning the night with the worst average (.227) in the NL with runners in scoring position since the All-Star break, Atlanta has scored two runs or less in 20 of Miller's 27 starts.
"Honestly I don't know where all those stats sit," Miller said. "I'm reading a book (pitching coach) Roger (McDowell) gave me. It's all about how stats and all that stuff (don't) really reflect on how you perform. You can make a good pitch and give up a hit. You want to be the best you can be, but it's all about going out there and competing. The stats are a benefit on the side."
Miller (5-12) gave up six hits and struck out seven in seven innings.
After getting blown out by an aggregate 38-11 score in a three-game series sweep by the New York Yankees, the Braves' offense was no match for journeyman Chris Narveson, a journeyman making his second start since 2012.
Narveson (2-1) allowed two hits, two walks and struck out three in 5 1/3 innings. He left the game with a blister on his left middle index finger.
Miller's 19-start streak is the longest in the majors this year and an in-season Atlanta record. Carl Morton has the longest franchise streak at 22 starts from Sept. 10, 1975-July 18, 1976.
Miller, pitching on his usual five days' rest, was moved up one day in the rotation when Mike Foltynewicz was scratched three hours before the game with viral symptoms.
The Marlins went up 1-0 in the second on Cole Gillespie's second homer. Prado and Bour drove in runs against Matt Marksbury. Peter Moylan gave up Christian Yelich's RBI single in the ninth.
Miller pitched out of a jam in fifth. J.T. Realmuto singled, stole second and advanced to third on catcher Christian Bethancourt's throwing error, but Miller struck out the next three batters he faced.
Miller is 0-11 with a 3.13 ERA since beating the Marlins 6-0 on May 17.
"He's a great pitcher," Narveson said. "He's having tough luck. You feel for him, the sting of starts that he's had. I always thought he had really good stuff. He'll get through it, I know that."
Atlanta's disastrous weekend against the Yankees was its worst three-game series since Cincinnati's Big Red Machine lineup scored 35 runs against the Braves in 1977.
NICE KNOWING YOU
The Braves traded LF Jonny Gomes to the Kansas City Royals for minor league shortstop Luis Valenzuela during the game. Gomes went 0 for 2 and left after the fifth. He hugged his teammates in the dugout and began packing up his belongings in the clubhouse. The 34-year-old Gomes has been in the postseason four times since 2010.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Marlins: Jennings said RF Giancarlo Stanton, who broke his left hand June 26, will make his first rehab appearance in Tuesday's doubleheader for Single-A Jupiter. Monday's game was rained out. ... Yelich, still bothered by a sore right knee, was out of the starting lineup for the fifth straight game but entered as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.
Braves: SS Andrelton Simmons was scratched with right ankle inflammation about 15 minutes before the first pitch. Pedro Ciriaco took his place in the lineup and went 1 for 3.
UP NEXT
Marlins: LHP Justin Nicolino (2-2) will face Atlanta for the first time. He has a 3.65 ERA in six career starts.
Braves: LHP Manny Banuelos (1-2) will make his fifth career start as he faces Miami for the first time. He has a 2.49 ERA.
